Graded EX 5 (PD) by PSA. Attractive mid-grade example of Eddie Mathews’ rookie card. In addition to being his rookie card, 1952 Topps card #407 Eddie Mathews is also one of only a few key Hall of Famers in the rare high-number series, and as the last card in the set, is also a condition rarity. Just as card #1 Pafko was subject to wear due to gravitating to the top of the pile, #407 Mathews was also subject to excessive wear at the bottom of the pile. In anything even resembling high grade, this has always been a very difficult card for anyone putting together a quality 1952 Topps set. This example displays a crisp and sharp image, brilliant colors, and light corner wear. Centered slightly toward the bottom bottom. The red nameplate on the reverse is almost completely devoid of text, hence the print defect qualifier. The text that is visible is bold. Back condition issue aside, this an extremely attractive example that would be worthy of any 1952 Topps set or Hall of Fame rookie-card collection. Reserve $500.
