Collection of nine different (plus two duplicates) N172 Old Judges consisting exclusively of players from the Brooklyn team posed in an outdoor setting. Issued by Goodwin & Company from 1887 to 1890, N172 Old Judges are universally recognized as the premier nineteenth-century baseball-card set. These cards are part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. In the following listing, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the comprehensive Old Judge book checklist. The collection consists of the following: #199-1 Greer (Fr), 199-4 Greer (Fr), 222-1 Henderson (Vg due to light surface scrape), 320-1 McTamany (Gd), two 370-1 Pinkney (narrow, otherwise Fr and trimmed, otherwise Vg), 370-2 Pinkney (altered, otherwise Gd), 455-1 Terry (Gd due to tiny ink spots on reverse), two 455-3 Terry (Vg and trimmed, otherwise Vg), and 460-2 Toole (pencil mark on reverse, otherwise Vg+). This is a very pleasing group of Old Judges featuring exclusively desirable Brooklyn players. Total: 11 cards. Reserve $200.
