Offered is a collection of eight different N172 Old Judges composed exclusively of Western Association players, highlighted by one Denver Grizzlies. Issued by Goodwin & Company from 1887 to 1890, N172 Old Judges are universally recognized as the premier nineteenth-century baseball-card set. These cards are part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. In the following listing, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the comprehensive Old Judge book checklist. The collection consists of the following: #54-4 Burks/Sioux City (Fr), 171-3 Freeman/Milwaukee (Pr-Fr due to back damage), 265-4 Klusman/Denver (Fr), 339-3 Nagle/Omaha (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg), 361-3 Parsons/Minneapolis (Pr due to back damage), 424-2 F. Smith/Des Moines (label trimmed from bottom, otherwise Fr due to pencil on reverse), 463-2 Treadway/St. Paul (Pr-Fr due to back damage), and 482-5 Weber/Sioux City (Pr-Fr due to back damage). This is a very pleasing group of Old Judges featuring exclusively desirable Western Association players. Total: 8 cards. Reserve $200.
