N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet proof of Yank Robinson of the St. Louis Browns. Produced by the Scholten Portraits studio of St. Louis, the premier baseball photographic studio in St. Louis during the 1880s. Scholten provided many images of St. Louis (and Louisville) players for use by Goodwin in the N172 and N173 Old Judge series. The "proof" cabinets, which feature the image on a mount with advertising for the studio in the lower margin, were not only provided to Goodwin & Co. or other companies for their commercial use but were also often given to players, family, or made available to the public as a means of advertising. This is a fascinating and particularly scarce cabinet card with strong photo contrast. Robinson is depicted with his hands shoulder high ready to make a catch (Pose #390-5) in his St. Louis Browns uniform and trademark pillbox hat. A very elaborate advertisement for Scholten Portraits, including information about its prize-winning endeavors at numerous fairs and competitions, covers the entire reverse. Overall Fair condition, with moderate wear on the left and top edges and a crease in the lower right, a few ink marks on the reverse, and scattered soiling on front and back. This is a very pleasing N173 cabinet proof card that would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced nineteenth-century baseball collection. Reserve $1,000.
