Newly discovered 1887 Kalamazoo Bats team card of the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association issued by Chas. Gross & Co., which long ago had the advertisement on the bottom clipped off. Encapsulated as Authentic by SGC (submitted by REA). All Kalamazoo Bats team cards are extremely rare. This team is highlighted by Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson and Harry Stovey, a major star of the day who many believe deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, both of whom are standing in the back-row center. Although the card has numerous flaws, including a heavy vertical crease, paper residue on the lower front, and an ink notation on the reverse, it displays a strong photograph with ideal contrast and superb focus. The Athletics is a particularly interesting card in the series as most of the Kalamazoo Bats individual player cards feature Philadelphia players. The players on this team card were also each honored with an individual Kalamazoo Bats card. Only six different teams are known to exist. No new teams have been discovered since the 1960s, so the set appears to be complete at six. This Kalamazoo Bat was just recently discovered (along with eight additional N690 Kalamazoo Bats, which were offered as separate lots in REA's Summer 2021 auction) by a noncollector who just happened to come across this card among the family's possessions. This card represents a very rare, possibly unique opportunity to obtain an extremely attractive low-grade example of this significant nineteenth-century rarity for a small fraction of what this card would sell for in an undamaged state. Reserve $300.
