Tremendous partial set of 102 different (of the 143 in the set) N284 Buchner Gold Coin Tobacco cards highlighted by twenty-two Hall of Famers including Cap Anson, Charles Comiskey, Buck Ewing, Jim O'Rourke, and "Old Hoss" Radbourn. Also included are thirty-three duplicates. This is a very substantial group of these scarce and very colorful nineteenth-century tobacco cards. Buchners are unusual in that they feature generic illustrations of the ballplayers rather than the actual likeness of the identified player. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the largest accumulations of N284 Buchners to ever be offered in a public auction! Each card in this collection technically grades modestly (Poor to Fair) due to ink writing and/or marks on the reverses. The appearance of the fronts range from Pr to Vg-Ex, averaging Gd-Vg. Sixteen cards are trimmed, including six that are trimmed down to the picture. We have selected five cards for grading and authentication by SGC. Keys: Anson/hands outstretched (trimmed to picture, otherwise Pr), Brouthers/batting (ink writing on reverse, otherwise Vg), Brouthers/fielding (ink writing on reverse, otherwise Gd), Clarkson/ball at chest (Pr), Clarkson/right arm extended (ink writing on reverse, otherwise Vg), Comiskey (POOR 1), two Connor/hands at face level (ink writing on reverse, otherwise Vg and trimmed, otherwise Pr), Ewing/hands at neck (POOR 1), Ewing/ready to tag (Pr), Keefe/ball out of hand (ink writing on reverse, otherwise Gd), Kelly/right field (Pr), O'Rourke/hands in front (trimmed to picture, otherwise Pr), O'Rourke/hands on knees (Pr), two Radbourn/hands above waist (POOR 1 and measures a bit small, otherwise Pr), Radbourn/hands at chest (POOR 1), Sunday (FAIR 1.5), two Thompson/hands at belt (Fr and Pr-Fr), Thompson/hands at chest (Pr), Ward/crouched (trimmed to picture, otherwise Pr), and Ward/hands left knee (ink writing on reverse, otherwise Fr). Missing the following forty-one cards for completion: Anson/left hand on right hip, Arundel, Bassett, Cahill, Casey, Connor hands outstretched, Corbett, Crane, Cushman, Dailey, Deasley, Denny/hands on thighs, Donnelly, Farrar, Ferguson, Fulmer, Gerhardt, Glasscock/hands on knees, Hynes/fielding, Keefe/ball in hand, Kelly/catcher, Krieg/"Craig", McClellan, Miller, Morrill/hands outstretched, Morrissey/"Morrissy", Mulvey/hands on knees, Mulvey/hands together, Myers, Nelson, Peoples, Purcell, Richardson/2nd base, Schomberg, Seery/hands outstretched, Von Der Ahe/Ward/hands on knees, Whitney, Williamson/2nd base, Wood/fielding, and Wood/stealing. This is an extremely pleasing and substantial group from the Buchner Tobacco set, one of the few full-color baseball-card sets of the nineteenth century, and one of the most artistically interesting, distinctive, and classic baseball-card sets of the 1880s. Total: 135 cards. Reserve $1,000.
