Graded VG 3 by PSA. Extremely rare example of Ty Cobb's "fielding" pose variation card from the highly regarded A. C. Dietsche Detroit Tigers postcard set, issued in 1907. This issue was produced by the Dietsche Postcard Company of Detroit to commemorate the Tigers' participation in the 1907 World Series. Cobb is the only player with two poses in the Dietsche set, and for some reason the Cobb fielding pose is far rarer than his batting pose, to such an extraordinary degree that we can only assume the Cobb fielding pose was replaced with the batting pose early in the print run. In fact, this is only the third example of this card that we have offered in the last 18 years! Of special note, this card is considered by many collectors to be Ty Cobb's true rookie card. A number of other issues can also claim that important distinction. (We realize that the definition of what is a player's rookie card can sometimes be very controversial and vary from collector to collector.) The fact that the Dietsche postcard set features a short biography of the player on the back makes this postcard even more "card-like" than many more traditional issues. The card features a crisp black-and-white image of Cobb fielding, with minor edge and corner wear, a small surface indentation in the background, and a light crease at the top edge. The reverse is lightly soiled along the left edge. The Dietsche postcard of Ty Cobb represents an outstanding overlooked value compared to most other early Cobb cards, including those issued a couple of years later that are widely recognized by many collectors as Cobb's rookie cards. This is an outstanding example of this rare pose variation and what many collectors believe reasonably qualifies as Cobb's true rookie card. Reserve $5,000.
