Graded MINT 9 by PSA. Presented is an exceptional ultra-high-grade example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the E98 “Set of 30” candy-card issue. The manufacturer of E98 is unknown, and the set might be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically). E98 is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. For many years, E98s were among the scarcest of the 1910-era caramel cards, but the recent “Black Swamp Find” (from which this card originates) has changed the population dramatically. E98s have always been very desirable, and their increased availability and noteworthiness because of the find might have actually increased demand as more collectors have become familiar with the set. This card is perfectly preserved with outstanding color, an extremely bold red background, perfect centering, flawless registration, and four sharp corners. The reverse is perfectly clean and boldly printed. This card has outstanding eye appeal and presents at a level that borders, in our opinion, on Gem Mint! Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade, making these high-grade "Black Swamp Find" cards of all the greater note. A superb ultra-high-grade E98 example of the legendary Ty Cobb, one of the key cards from this rare and desirable early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $10,000.
